The Project

A309 Kingston Bypass

This recently completed scheme at the A309 Kingston Bypass incorporated the renewal and upgrade of an existing Vehicle Restraints System (VRS).

Arbus in partnership with Kier Highways and Surrey County Council (SCC) worked to very short and demanding timescales to both design, approve and install a new VRS System.

A309 Kingston Bypass

The Challenge

A 1.1km section of the A309 consisted of approximately 1.1 km of double sided central reservation VRS, and 3 existing single sided VRS verge runs.

All of the existing VRS was not to the current specifications and had long since past its’ end of life. There where major safety concerns over its’ retention capabilities, and therefore it needed to be urgently replaced and upgraded.

Arbus, Kier and SCC worked collaboratively together from Investigation to completed scheme to a challenging timescale to make sure a new VRS system was provided that returned that part of the network to a safe condition.

The Solution

Due to the location of the project, the high traffic volumes of the area and safety of the workforce a temporary barrier system was installed so the works could be carried out quickly, efficiently, safely and minimize disruption to the road user.

Arbus worked collaboratively with our supply chain partner Highway Care to plan and deliver the works to the specific requirements for this site including the installation and removal of the temporary barrier in one shift under full road closure.

The scheme required detailed planning, programming, Traffic Management (TM) implementation, road space booking and liaison with local business and authorities to ensure the works were delivered effectively.

Static Digital matrix signs were installed in advance of the works and remained in place throughout the works informing road users of the planed dates and activities. Arbus worked collaboratively with our supply chain partner Renteq Highways to plan and deliver the TM works to the specific requirements for this site. This included the provision of 24 hour TM maintenance and breakdown and recovery vehicles on site for the duration of the works.

During the design and investigation works multiple underground services and the discovery of an old existing road beneath the carriageway required a variety of solutions to allow for the installation of the new VRS system. Working collaboratively with our supply chain partner Hill and Smith and utilising Arbus’s new revolutionary innovation Smartraft system we were able to design and install the VRS as per the design and site requirements whilst also overcoming the issues found.

The Result

A successfully delivered scheme with only minor delays to the original programme. ECI and collaboration before and during the works between Arbus, Kier and Surrey County Council ensured that the scheme was delivered safety and efficiently.

Arbus would also like to thank the following members of our supply chain community for their support during the successful delivery of this scheme:

Renteq Highways, Highway Care, Hill and Smith, Axtell, Highway Fencing, Abbot Fixings and Landbuild.

Feedback

“Arbus have once again demonstrated the benefits of their collaborative approach and turn key solution on this scheme.

They proposed a TM layout that could accommodate two other contractors schemes in close proximity to overcome the restricted road space availability on this busy section of the Surrey network, and their dedicated and resourceful site team and the good working relationship they have built with their supply chain meant Arbus were able to mitigate the delays caused by issues outside of their control to meet deadlines for the removal of the temporary barrier.”

David White, Senior Structural Engineer – Surrey County Council

“SCC are very pleased to have worked alongside our partners Kier and Arbus on this project, the collaborative approach and resourcefulness of all to overcome the technical and operational difficulties at this location including the introduction of innovative products has meant the project was delivered on time and within the budget constraints.

Methods of coordinating works alongside other key operations which were being carried out at the same time which could have proved problematic have been handled effortlessly.”

Lloyd Allen, Infrastructure Team Manager – Surrey County Council

“I’d like to thank Arbus for their dedication to the planning before and during this project. Arbus, working jointly with Kier and Surrey developed a scheme solution that addressed the various challenges at this site and then successfully delivered it.

It became necessary to co-ordinate traffic management around other works at short notice and Arbus and their supply chain were able to resolve this and participate in the co-ordination to reach agreement to proceed.

A fine example of collaboration between Arbus, Kier and Surrey County Council.”

Tim Smith, Kier Delivery Manager – Kier
